Wire Ledge for Grid and Slatwire

A small-but-deep all wire ledge provides shelf space among Display Hooks on Grid or, in this case, Black Slatwire. Similar trays are available for Pegboard and Slatwall, with and without sides to contain the product. Hooks are 90 degree Tip Single Prong Display Hooks with Flatback Slatwall and Slatwire Backplates. The tray itself features a backplate design common to Grid fixtures. Wiper Rack Microcosm

Auto part stores have full-gondola displays for windshield wipers. But if you are going to sell wipers in a Dollar Store environment, you are going to have to provide some manner of point-of-purchase rack to merchandise the family of sizes. This multi-tier, stepped-rack microcosm vends wipers from ranks of hooks. The rack itself also hangs as a hook from pegboard. Flip-front label holders allow individual facing identification and pricing. A rack-front application guide allows customers to look up their car and wiper make and model.

How Fixtures Sell Funnels

This is amazingly creative point-of-purchase fixturing for funnels. Positioned directly with automobile oil, an oft forgotten or overlooked aspect of getting oil in the engine filler hole is put front and center. Even though most engine oil packages are designed to facilitate a neat pour, many cramped engine compartments still demand a funnel. Curiously there is also feminine interest in funnels. My wife loves them. Maybe there is another cross sell available in front of the gallon cans of imported olive oil. Negative Space Enhances Hooks

Here an auto detailing salon uses massing along with “negative space“ to elevate what might otherwise have been a cheap-looking display of  air fresheners and related auto items. Open uncluttered space above and below gives an expansive and slightly more expensive feel. Many items were allowed several facings to help fill the wall and give an illusion of extensive choice. And the enforced wait time while your car was being pampered, resulted in the customers studying the merchandise closely as if art hung in a museum. Everyone I observed not only browsed but handled an item or two, and often purchased. Fixtures are standard Single Prong FlatBack Slatwall Hooks, though I might have suggested Ball End Safety Frontwires, rather than Straight Cut for a family-visited business like this.  SEE “Careful Alexis Sharp Hooks” for a detailed discussion.

Run by heavily-accented Russians, I was impressed at the Socialist grasp of Capitalism. But then the merchandising and advertising sub-sets of Capitalism are only a sophisticated version of Propaganda, after all. And Propaganda is central to all political credos. Ask my wife, a former Soviet citizen, and present-day devoted Capitalist.

Either engines have gotten smaller or it has been too many years since I could claim the title of “motorhead.” I might expect to find such an assortment of small diameter adapters in a plumbing or industrial supply store. 6v Battery Ramp

If you thought D-cell Batteries were bulky, space-consumptive and heavy to hang on hooks, consider these 6v Batteries. Even one-up there is no way to hang with the other battery packs. Solution? An angled battery backstop that faces items up from the base deck for easy visibility even by tall folk like me. But having seen batteries shrink is size for decades as devices learn to sip not guzzle power, I rack my brain to imagine the use for these brick-like behemoths. I think I recall camping lamps that might have used batteries like this. But a modern use might be buying 2 to jump start your 12v car battery (Refresh my memory, if I wire two 6-volt batteries in series rather than parallel, do I get 12 volts? Best Typefaces for Retail and POP

Trust me to get it all backwards. From an article on the worst fonts I managed to scavenge lists of the best and most used typefaces. Many are among my personal favorites too, and are as good a starting place as any for that retail sign, shelf edge label, or point-of-purchase promotion you have in mind. I tried searching for “favorite typefaces of David Ogilvy” without success, so you are stuck with this.

Know that there is some difference of opinion on “best” typefaces even though those above are favorites of many designers according to a limited survey. It is sometimes argued that serif rather than sans serif typefaces are several times more readable, hence their use in traditional media like newspaper. Others argue that all caps is more visible than upper and lower case, hence the use of capital letters in teleprompters (autocue) for television broadcast.

As an interesting aside, the Univers typeface (number 5 under used regularly above) was the favorite font of my grad school chairman, Dr. Francis Ferguson, AIA (1932-1995, Notre Dame University 1956, Columbia University 1962, 1969). It seems the “student apple” does not fall far from the “teacher’s tree.” A great many of these fonts, particularly Helvetica, are very Univers-like (or actually I think it more correct that Univers is Helvetica-like). And almost all have stood the test of time in advertising and graphic communications.

Personally, I prefer Helvetica for body copy over Univers, but would be agreeable to using Univers in a heading. As you see, my old professor and patron and I did not completely agree all the time. But I am known to be contentious and picky, with a mind of my own.

Goodyear Blimp Balloon POP

If I owned a Blimp, I would surely use an inflatable as the focus for retail point-of-purchase as often as possible. It would be unmistakable branding, even from a distance. I would also offer inflated balloons as a giveaway kids toy to increase floor traffic. For adult traffic I would offer a RC (Radio Controlled) Blimp with high-end tire purchase, and a contest for free use of the Blimp for a private party or sports event. Progressive Grover Linkedin.com Group comments on “Small Signs Create Master Sign” led me to research type sizes for readability at various distances in retail and advertising. I found many highly detailed research studies, with formulas and full scientific analysis, and even correlation to angle of view and speed of observer. But these simple guidelines found on Science Buddies seemed very clear and to the point … even citing the famous advertising expert David Ogilvy as the original source. If you know of better guidelines, please post so that we can all benefit. If not, David Ogilvy surely wouldn’t steer us wrong.

Twin J-Hooked Tie-Downs

Tracked as much because of my fascination for the strategy as the fixturing itself, here heavy-duty hardware items are double hung on twin J-Hooks.  The effect looks great, and because of all the weight anchoring the facing, it vends easily and well regardless of J-hooked frontwires. Even replacing the item worked, though I am not sure that could be said for a light-weight, lightly-stocked display, where the hooks were not as well anchored. Still a J-hook that requires a bit of tricky threading to remove the product, might not be my first choice for a Twin Hook situation. *****

I remain fascinated by Twin Hooks, and when that makes senses for a package. If anyone has rules of thumb for twin hook use …. package size, weight, configuration … please enlighten us with comments.

Focusing on women’s tools might be politically incorrect. So I will masquerade this post among the exiting Twin-Hooked-Product entries. Though most in that thread are Twin Hooked, a few violate the rule with single or offset hooks. What criteria dictates twin hooking? Package size? Product weight? Common hook load capacity? Maybe if we follow the thread long enough a pattern will develope … or someone will enlighten us with an insightful comment.

Removable Spray Can Hang Tabs

A cool concept for capped spray cans and bottle. This pivoting hang tab snaps on and off the cap as seen in alternate facings of the main photo. With tag on, they can be hung, both for merchandising in retail, and in the basement, workshop or garage of the consumer. Not hanging the item, or the tags bug you? They just pop off. Retail “Pet Peeve” in Spanish

One of my pet peeves has now migrated to Spanish. To me a “Sorry, Out of Stock” tag is a terrible waste of space and merchandising opportunity. As customer I can pretty well see the item is out of stock. How about cross- or up-selling me to a nearby substitute? How about offering me a special discount on the restocked item if I return to purchase it later? And if you insist upon placing such tags, and speaking in the local tongue, how about Polish “Out of Stock” tags in my Polish neighborhood? Let’s not discriminate against Poles or other minorities, okay? CLICK the thumbnail to read the tag in English.

Anti-Planogram Anti-Theft Hook

Here security is tight with twin, locking, anti-theft fixtures per facing of double hooked packages. A single molded adhesive label holder is provided for each facing. The screw-anchored backplate shows an almost permanent commitment to product layout. Changing this planogram is gonna be a bitch. Good thing the fixtures are so bright and new. They may have to last a long time in this location. And I hope for the Sales Associates sake the same key opens all locks. Maybe mounting height alone might deter theft in this case? These puppies were way up there. *****

Hooks Exalt Steering Wheels

Hung like pictures against the wall, these steering when covers take on the appearance of real custom steering wheels. If I jumped to that conclusion here, why wouldn’t others believe these are real wood in my car? An inexpensive product raised up a notch by smart retail fixturing and visual merchandising. Only possible on Pegboard, an interesting visual layout that actually presents the wrenches stepped size- and price-wise. A quick easy improvement would be through use of Straight Entry Hooks. These would allow changes within the crowded sizing display without requiring adjustment of more than the hook in question.
