This impromptu Pin Holder is provided as direct comparison to the magnetic fixture reviewed in “Fitting Room Pin Holder.” What is to be learned? If you don’t provide us with the retail Amenities we need we will resort to creating what we need in store. This in all probability is a rubberized door stop pressed into pin service and thereby actually removes a danger: a lose stick pin.

Originally  a consumer’s cooperative, I have found REI a great resource for my own equipment across several outdoor avocations. Calculating the Effectiveness of Pinterest in Specialized B2B Social Media.

Surely anyone in retail fixtures or with a brand eyes Pinterest as a possible Social Media tool. Is it worth the effort? You be the judge based upon my findings. FixturesCloseUp uses Pinterest first as a way to provide a visual summary of fixture findings, and secondly to “narrowcast” or “niche market” to the community of users who prefer that channel of use and communication. According to PinPuff Pinterest Ratings, FixturesCloseUp scores a B2B sweet-spot Reach Score of 41.3, an upper range Activity Score of 64, and a predictably low 1.9 Virility Score. Given FixturesCloseUp goals, I am happy with the results. As many as 50 visitors a day to the FixturesCloseUp Blog link out to visual summaries on Pinterest, and a slightly lesser number link back or originate on Pinterest. As a “narrow casting” tool, FixturesCloseUp has 562 followers monitoring new picture posts. As for a low Virility score, it is expected, and even I know that little in pegboard and retail fixtures stirs interest beyond the bounds of the industry. Pegboard Hooks and Label Holders are just not something to write home about or share with your friends on Saturday Night.

Can I recommend Pinterests as a Social Media Channel for other fixturers and component manufacturers? Not unless you already have the images to post from your main Social Media and corporate blog efforts. Also I do not recommend posting your catalog images. Post new fixture uses, unusual redesigns, fixture advice, and odd applications. As a visual summary and search supplement, Pinterest offers an alternative not easily available on the WordPress Blog platform. But Pinterest does not in and of itself drive huge volumes of Retail Fixture traffic.

If you want to promote maximum fashion jewelry sales, why not offer a tote to easily carry the many selections? This integrally-handled carry was offered at shelfside on cosmetic jewelry display islands for the convenience of shoppers. My wife, loved it. My only criticism was that the tote dispenser did not communicate what it was and what it offered. Click through the gallery and see if you agree. My wife did not it use until I showed her what they were and put it in her hand. Other than that, Bravo Old Navy.

Complex Tag System Stymies SEO

Complex Tags Better Serve Users, But Constrain Response

Part of the rationale for FixturesCloseUp is a living laboratory in Social Media. So over time I get to play with options without running the risk of “crash and burn” on the main corporate website. Good thing.

In December I undertook to increase the complexity of the CATEGORY and TAG system on FixturesCloseUp. Conventional wisdom supported CATEGORY and TAG systems for better Search Engine Optimization, but also suggested simple systems rather than complex. I already had a simple system of about 10 each (22 total). But to research fixtures adequately a far more complicated system was needed. I grew the complexity 10 fold to more than 200. This allowed me a fine grain of resolution, and you the user more detailed research capability. Retail Fixture TAGs went far beyond simple “Umbrella” to “Umbrella Courtesy Fixtures” vs “Umbrella Merchandising Fixtures” and more.

As a result of complex TAGS (and Pinterest integration outbound linking) growth has leveled off. My explanation is that 200+ highly specific FIXTURE TAGs are less popular under Search than a simple system of broad general-use TAGs. And visitors who arrive are more tightly focused on a specific need and landing point, rather than pleasantly surprised by the site and prone to linger. Though I have posts that could qualify for a “Lady Gaga” TAG (Lady Gaga Sunglass Spokesmodel) I prefer to TAG the fixture rationale for the discussion (“Push Pin / Push Button Tag”) and lose the popularity boost of a “Gaga“TAG. Likewise I could TAG well-known Gwen Stefani but wouldn’t your needs be better served by the FIXTURE TAG, with Gwen herself left to KEYWORD SEARCH: Gwen Stefani?

In the long run I think complex TAGs benefit my readers. I would rather have a smaller, correctly focused readership, than better reader numbers resulting from Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani fans and other spillover. But then I always was a contrarian. I prefer to “stay the course” for now, and see if growth patterns return. And by sharing these insights with the industry I get the benefit of alternate advice and commentary. Those who follow FixturesCloseUp know that it is not only a tool for retail and point-of-purchase fixture and design research, it is an ongoing experiment in Social Media as applied to understanding B2B and Inbound Marketing. As a Marketing Communications professional (read “Adman“) I learn a lot by playing in the Social Media sandbox. It is like having a focus group at my fingertips.

I found this insight from the ThomasNet Industrial Marketer particularly apropos and worth quoting as a more highly respected source than myself. The “Metrics that Matter” in B2B SEO is not necessarily an increase in unique visitors. I am willing to sacrifice gross traffic volume for truly interested visitors. I can get thousands of readers on “Hooks” or even “Pegboard Hooks.” But if I can get readers to consider a posts about “Attached-Back Hooks for Pegboard” and then branch to other specialized posts like Attached-Back Hooks for Slotwall, or Cross-Slotted Display Surfaces, or Straight-Entry Hooks generally, those are the reader metrics I’d prefer. Of course occasionally I have to spice up the topics with design offerings like “Feng Shui for Retailer.” Please pardon that Admen like challenging headlines and “bait and switch.”

It did cry out to be included in my Skulls in Retail series, even if I cannot guarantee you can acquire one. Call it a tribute to Tattoo Parlor visual merchandising. The photo is watermarked Jess Gilby. The image itself was passed down so many times on Pinterest I can’t backtrack it to the original source (though I found another un-cited version on Tumblr).

Macy’s Recycled Recycling Bin?

I have to assume that the material for this temporary plastic corrugate recycling bin is recycled itself. How appropriate, if so. And also if so, I would recommend that the maker or sponsor, in this case Macys, imprint that fact on the bin and revel in the bragging rights. Once full, I wonder if you drop the whole thing in a plastic shredder and start all over making the new recycled bin that pops out the other end? CLICK the thumbnail for a closeup of the imprint design. I wonder if soy or other eco-friendly inks? Trade names for the material itself include Coroplast, Plasticor, and others. The Recycle vs Landfill Choice

We all would recycle if we could and if you made it easy for us to do so. And we would all even pre-sort for you if we could. But this offer of waste disposal is a tad confusing. Just what are “Landfill” candidates, and what mix of rubbish goes in which of two “Recycle” bins? Confusing the matter further, various retailers offer different recycling breakdowns, and where I live, even municipalities can choose different recycling streams so as not to overwhelm the recyclables market. So what is an eco-friendly shopper to do? To be fair, one “Recycling” slot does list accepted matter in words and icon, but what to put in the other recycling opening, and what truly goes to the landfill? I would guess organics and food waste, but what else? In defense of this unnamed retailer, they are usually VERY environmentally friendly and sustainable. The chain is named after one of the famous character in either the Star Wars sagas or Battlesstar Galactica. Leave a comment, please,  if you know which.

I had to have this for my Sales Empowerment and Sales Psychology thread even though I prefer Neon Script vs Block Lettering. But citing and pathing back to the original sours proves a challenge. Best I can offer is mociun.tumblr.com via gretchenjonesnyc.tumblr.com via dainty-as-fuck.tumblr.com. But no matter who the source, this is a more pithy version of the anonymous  consumerism adage, “He who dies with the most toys, wins!” And use of neon as signing is in itself unusual and eye-catching, though normally far more cursive in style.
