Here an auto detailing salon uses massing along with “negative space“ to elevate what might otherwise have been a cheap-looking display of  air fresheners and related auto items. Open uncluttered space above and below gives an expansive and slightly more expensive feel. Many items were allowed several facings to help fill the wall and give an illusion of extensive choice. And the enforced wait time while your car was being pampered, resulted in the customers studying the merchandise closely as if art hung in a museum. Everyone I observed not only browsed but handled an item or two, and often purchased. Run by heavily-accented Russians, I was impressed at the Socialist grasp of Capitalism. But then the merchandising and advertising sub-sets of Capitalism are only a sophisticated version of Propaganda, after all. And Propaganda is central to all political credos.
