A great many shelf-edge trays are open wire construction. Some include label holders and even C-Channel. But here the C-channel wraps around the tray and is a structural element itself. Why add a C-channel to a rack, when it can be the rack? But note there are wire struts and metal stampings as rear supports. So the C-channel is not the be all and end all of this design.
